the first time I heard "cold smoke" was last year: I found your music website and downloaded all your songs. I put a couple onto the shuffle and went to the store. and on the way in I was listening to "last guest" which I liked right away, and "was one" as well and then I went to the checkout line and "cold smoke" played as I paid. and it was soooo good I didn't really want to go home so I just kept clicking the button back and listening to it again and again and the stuff melted in the bags. because I didn't want to get in the car and have to turn it off. true story!

I think you guys are fabulous.  I've introduced a lot of people here (Kansas, USA) to your music, and they love it too!

I put all of the 200 Lurkers music onto my iPod and listened to some of it on the subway, etc. Dude, you are truly fantastic. I haven't listened to all the songs yet, and I haven't totally dived into the lyrics, but I have listened to some of them and read some of them and they are definitely beautiful.

WHY COLD SMOKE IS THE GREATEST SONG

I love this song. Almost more than I love my dog, definitely more than I love Almond Snickers, which is saying a lot, but since I just ate an Almond Snickers out of my daughter's trick-or-treat bag and then played this song for the eighth time today, I think I can say that with some authority and certainty.

First of all, the way it starts off. Completely unpretentious, has that nice little second guitar line that rides over in the background. Let's just call it what it is: it's sexy. Then the drums. I know you sampled them off an indigo girls song somewhere, but they are fantastic the way they support the simple chord progression, then stumble down a short flight of stairs, then resume. It keeps it very interesting. I hate to compare artists but it's the same thing when Elliott Smith added big fuck-off drums to his songs (Bled White, Independence Day, Sweet Adeline) it turned an introverted artist into an extrovert. It became part of his voice, when his singing voice wasn't big or angry enough to express what was in the lyrics. Those were always the greatest songs; they felt courageous in a way.

Back to the bliss that is Cold Smoke: Every few measures, something gets added in : voice, drums, bass, accordion, xylophone, but it never gets heavy, it never gets too much. It just fills out the song and everything complements the core of guitar/drums perfectly.

My absolute favorite thing about this song is twofold: but it's the way you take your time between verses and play that short solo, which is one of those little graceful, understated figures that george harrison might have thought up on a track from Rubber Soul. But the BEST-best part is when you end it with the harmonic chord and there's a slight pause and it goes into about ten seconds of BLISS with the glockenspiel/guitar playing in that odd minor key - that part, and into the second verse, has affected me the same way since the very first day I heard it: I get this melancholy feeling that spreads through from my chest to my whole body. It makes me physically ache. And I've heard it many many times, and it always does the same thing to me. Very very few songs manage that. That is why it is GREAT.

There's something also about the way you sing this one too. I love the the way you overlap the lines, though I bet that is a pain in the ass to reproduce live. My one complaint about your singing sometimes is that your voice sounds far too nice and pleasant for what I know lies beneath some of these songs; although I'd say that has definitely has started to change in the last say 5 or 6 songs you've done. This one gets it exactly right; it does start out very gentle and a little melancholy as you set the scene, then there's a sense of longing that the minor key of the second verse of the song ("the men that you invited...") and then when you sing "so CHEERS to us" that bitterness comes bubbling up...ahh, that's a good moment. Again you add in some space right after that...which is important as the emotion changes once again to an acceptance/resignation of the "apology" outro....it's wonderful how it repeats to become the theme of the song, and the little notes that vary with the glockenspiel...and how much do I love the fact that you didn't fade it all the way out like one would expect, but finish it strong and echoing? Leaving me DEVASTATED, okay? And all I want to do is just hit "repeat" and play it all over again...

hmm, I love your music.  A friend of mine sent me the tracks from the space and the sea.  I have a radio show in college and when I get back, I will definitely be playing your music on the air in the US.  Honestly, you guys are amazing.  I'm going to download all the songs from here .. wish I knew german ..

i think i never took the chance to tell you how much i appreciated your sending me the lurkers' record. your music is very very pleasing to the senses – almost caressing. and although i am not an expert judge of technical details, i seem to notice a kind of crystalline and organic structure - throughout the record, but particularly in 'when you wish upon a starr', 'ohne dich', and 'estra-gone'. in the latter i adore the chorus 'today i am .., tomorrow i ..' - especially the filigree twist of the voice at the word 'tomorrow'. 'ohne dich' to me seems the most lyrical and tender-melodied track - perhaps also the german makes a difference, makes it more candid with a pure simplicity. but i must confess that the truly exceptional creation and my personal fave - the one thing which absolutely stands out in an altogether pleasant record - is 'when you wish upon a starr'. this song is somewhat frightening, somewhat, er, sublime maybe? it sounds dark, at the least; with a sort of religiously-tragic undertone - it is very ritual-like because of the persistent repetition of the same verse (i think this is the only track that is build upon a repetitive formula). the 'distant' one in the lyrics might be a divinity - a deus otiosus who has withdrawn from his creation or something. and then the voice-over could be what a priest utters as someone's last sacrament.. oh well, excuse my wild subjective associations! please. just tonight i put the CD on because i knew that its melancholic atmosphere will suit perfectly well my own sad mood.

Great songs and wonderful lyrics! Your music reminds me of many of my favourite bands but has something refreshingly different about it. Are you in the process of getting signed to a record label? Also I am very impressed by the negative type artwork. I am a big fan of The Smiths and artwork and clever lyrics were a very important part of the group. I would very much like a copy of your cd, please let me know how to obtain it as I would love my friends to hear the songs.

Cool sound! You remind me of Radiohead with a little bit of Semisonic added to the mix.

A splendid cd, melancholic, a piece of life in which everybody can mirror themselves. It brought to my mind so many past moments, some sad, some happy, an introspective trip in all senses. Here and there it also brought to my mind other artists, first of all Simon & Garfunkel, with their music of great communicative ability. Download all tracks, and read where they come from, or what inspired the songs, you'll not be diappointed. Thanks a lot, much respect to you! =)

I'm listening to your album with great pleasure, I must say! Very nice songs, and an outstanding production. (I don't know if this is home-made, but if it is, congratulations, it's a hell of a work!) As I hear the songs, several musicians/groups cross my mind (Jethro Tull, Sid Barret, David Bowie, Simon and Garfunkel, and yes, Suzanne Vega too) but I don't like pointing out similarities between music, because they are often reductive (I've just done it, sorry!). Often when we say "this group seems like that group" we're talking about lack of originality, well this is definitely not the case. The songs are truly originals. Keep up the good work.

Also vielen Dank nochmal!
